Tips for a Successful Start to the New Nursery Year

Aug 20, 2021 | Blog

As the start of our new academic year quickly approaches and anticipation grows amongst our young learners, there are many things that you can do to help your child ease into the beginning of their new journey. It is always an exciting time during which children will often have many questions about what the new year will bring. By implementing some strategies in the lead up to the first day of nursery, adapting to change and a new routine can be easier for the children.

Here are a few tips to help prepare your child for day 1 of the new term:

Start new routines early

During the week prior to the commencement of nursery, implement a new morning routine whereby your child will get up at the same time as they will when nursery begins. In some cases, this may be a little earlier than usual but it will help your child feel less tired and more comfortable with their morning routine when nursery begins. It always takes children a little while to adapt to new routines, but the less their sleep is interrupted, the more energy they will have to help support a smooth transition. Positive talk to build excitement

Speak positively about nursery in the weeks and days leading up to the new acdemic year. For children starting nursery, talk through what will happen during drop-off on the first day; make your child aware that you will be dropping them off and that they will be in the very safe hands of our wonderful teaching staff until pick-up. Help them begin to form a positive idea of what nursery will be like before they begin by discussing the fun learning, games, songs and play that will fill their days. Be realistic, and gently explain that they may be tired in their first week of nursery and reassure them about any fears they may have. Nursery transitions can be challenging for children, but the mindset of the parents and teachers really help them adapt.

Uniform and resources prep before day 1

Prep your child’s uniform ahead of time and encourage them to try it on at home. This will allow them to become more comfortable and familiar with their new everyday attire. Seeing themselves in their uniforms often adds a huge sense of excitement for day 1 and helps them visualise their big step. Preparing lunch boxes, bags and any other resources in good time is also recommended. If you are looking for some inspiration, have a look at our healthy lunchbox ideas for nursery blog.

Meet and greet with new teacher

Parents and children Meet and greet with their new teacher to welcome them to their new class the week prior to starting. Meeting your new teacher prior to the beginning of the new year is a great way to form an initial connection; it also allows some get-to-know-you time in which our teachers can find out about your child’s interests and passions. We can answer any questions that you or your child may have, and when it comes to day 1 of nursery, your child will feel much more relaxed as they will have already met their teacher.

We are so excited to see the children return to nursery and can’t wait to meet some of our new joiners. All of our teachers are ready for the new year of learning and development. Our aim in the first week of nursery is to help the children settle in and feel comfortable in their new environments and routines.
