Supporting Early Years Development at Home: A Thoughtful Approach for FS1 & FS2

Apr 8, 2026 | Blog

Providing Stability, Care, and Meaningful Learning During Uncertain Times

During times of change, it’s completely natural for parents to pause and wonder — is my child getting what they need?

The truth is, for young children, what matters most isn’t a perfect routine or long hours of structured learning. It’s feeling safe, supported, and connected.

In the early years, learning doesn’t only happen in a classroom or through a screen. It happens in the small, everyday moments — through play, conversation, and time spent together.

At Emirates British Nursery, we are here to support every family through this period, in ways that feel realistic, reassuring, and appropriate for each child’s stage of development, while staying aligned with the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

How Children in FS1 & FS2 Continue to Learn and Grow

At this age, children are naturally curious. They learn by exploring, asking questions, and engaging with the world around them.

You might notice your child:

  • Asking more “why” questions
  • Wanting to try things independently
  • Turning everyday objects into something imaginative
  • Seeking comfort in familiar routines

These are all important signs of development.

Through this time, we are using short, guided online sessions to stay connected and maintain a sense of routine, these are just one part of their learning journey.

For many children, especially younger ones, the impact of this is enhanced with simple, hands-on play and interaction at home.

Every Child Is Different — And That’s Okay

One of the most important things to remember is that there is no single “right” way to support young children at home.

Some children benefit from a little more structure and guided interaction. Others thrive when they are free to explore, move, and play at their own pace.

For example:

  • FS1 and FS2 children may enjoy short, engaging sessions and light structure
  • Younger children often learn best through movement, sensory play, and everyday experiences

Both approaches are equally valuable.

By understanding this, we can remove the pressure of comparison and focus on what truly matters — supporting each child in the way that suits them best.

Bringing Learning into Everyday Moments

You don’t need special materials or long activities to support your child’s development. Some of the most meaningful learning happens naturally throughout the day.

  • Talking together during meals builds communication skills
  • Reading a favourite story supports language and early literacy
  • Counting toys or steps introduces early maths
  • Playing, drawing, or listening to music encourages creativity
  • Exploring simple things around the home builds curiosity and understanding

These small moments add up in powerful ways.

Your Role Matters More Than You Think

You are not expected to become a teacher at home — and we understand that every family’s routine looks different.

Whether you are working, at home, or balancing multiple responsibilities, what matters most to your child is the sense of connection, consistency and reassurance they feel with you.

Even small, everyday moments — a conversation, shared time, or simply being present when you can — have a meaningful impact on their confidence and development.

There is no expectation to do everything. Keeping things simple, following your child’s interests where possible, and creating a sense of calm and security in your own way is more than enough.

Creating a Sense of Calm and Routine

Children feel most secure when their day has a gentle rhythm.

This doesn’t need to be strict — just predictable enough to help them feel comfortable.

A balance of:

  • Play
  • Quiet time
  • Movement
  • Rest

can help children stay engaged without becoming overwhelmed.

Even small routines can make a big difference in helping children feel settled and confident.

Growing Together, Wherever We Are

Early years education is about so much more than academics. It’s about building confidence, emotional security, and a love for learning.

And that can continue anywhere.

By focusing on connection, play, and understanding your child’s needs, you are already giving them exactly what they need to grow and thrive.

At Emirates British Nursery, our commitment remains the same —
to support every child and every family with care, guidance, and a strong foundation for the future.
